No one is trying to say calling Joe Paterno a legend makes what he did (or didn’t do to some extent) acceptable or justifiable. What he did was wrong but the man was still an icon in college football history for as long as people can remember. His coaching accolades, prestige, and, for most of his life, personable and good-hearted way of life is something that no scandal could erase. I renounce what he did and his inaction hurt innocent young boys and tarnished his name; however, the legend of Joe Paterno is and never will be dead because of what he did wrong.

  • A good period for this debate this morning:

The famed statue of Joe Paterno was taken down from outside the Pennsylvania State University football stadium Sunday, eliminating a key piece of the iconography surrounding the once-sainted football coach accused of burying child sex abuse allegations against a retired assistant.

Workers lifted the statue off its base and used a forklift to move it into Beaver Stadium as the 100 to 150 students watching chanted, “We are Penn State.”

A legend at motivating people to play a game?

That doesn’t make up for letting his staff abuse children.

No question here: Joe Pa is a Legend among Legends.

@PSU4EVER – when his greatest challenge arose, he failed. I had no respect for him the last few months of his life, why should I respect him in his death? I hope his failure is a lesson to all of us. It’s the most important lesson we can learn from Joe ‘s life – fight for the weak and helpless. Football means nothing – people mean everything

How can you say so many bad things about somebody after he did so much for college football, especially at Penn State?

  • Paterno let a child molester rape little kids in his own university, and didn’t say or do SHIT about it until literally about a few months ago… That automatically cancels out any goodwill and accomplishments he previously attained. He doesn’t deserve to be worshipped and revered as a god.

    Exactly Don! Well said!

Unbelieveable! How disrespectful for a man who just passed away and who didn’t do any of those things. He just didnt’ know how to handle the circumstances since he was old and obviously battling cancer.

It’s not how well you pace yourself n life, it’s how you finish the race. Horrible ending to his story and should be the nail in th coffin. There is no excuse for not protecting weak.

He’s a piece of crap for letting his coaching staff mess with those boys. why would anyone consider him to be a legend? yea, a legend for little boys

How is he a pervert because he did was his school and job told him to do?

Although it was a tragedy the scandal shouldn’t play a part in weather or not Joe Pa is a legend. He was the best coach ever. It wasn’t his fault that he had a pervert on staff. He is definitely a legend

  • I agree! What a disgrace to college football and Penn State University! Sandusky was obviously the one who was doing all the deeds, but Paterno let him do it! Both are equally as wrong. Why in the world would Paterno let Jerry do that unless approved of it. You are no legend Joe Pa. Sorry.

  • Joe Paterno. Shame on you! You did so good for the University until this the scandal. You let us all down and now you’re dead. I hope that you aren’t too hot right now. I can’t believe that you allowed all of those boys to be molested. Shame on you. you are NO LEGEND.
